Not Just A Welcoming Smile

This lovely lady is Miss Whiston, who is a member of the Magna Academy Reception team.

She has been with us for just a few months now but is already making a very warm and welcome addition to our excellent support staff group.

I hope you've had a chance to meet Miss Whiston at Reception and discovered for yourself what a kind, thoughtful and helpful member of staff she is.

But our Reception team does a lot more than just running the front-of-house service for the Academy and this little story illustrates just how instrumental they can be in improving the academic opportunity and the life chances of our students.

At Magna, we do have a small number of students who are 'print-disabled learners'. This group of students includes, for instance, those with dyslexia or those who are blind or partially sighted.

Typically, their needs would be met by ensuring that we take standard textbooks and increase the size of pages using our photocopying facilities. However, this can be a time-consuming and costly business that creates only a 'best endeavours' solution for these young learners.

Miss Whiston has tackled this issue with some excellent lateral thinking and has come up with a much smarter solution, that she is now in the process of implementing for the Academy, free of charge from the charity.

After a round of research online, Miss Whiston discovered that the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) runs a Book Share scheme that provides textbooks and materials to support the UK curriculum. It offers a range of accessible formats that can be read electronically or adapted to suit the personal reading needs of our learners, who can:

  • Listen to books with high quality text-to-speech voices
  • Hear and see highlighted words on screen
  • Read with digital braille or enlarged fonts
  • Create physical braille or large print
  • Read directly from your Internet browser
We are very fortunate to have a great support team at Magna Academy and Miss Whiston's efforts here in offering the best possible range of support tools to all our students is typical of the energy and drive they bring to the wider team.

Thank you, Miss Whiston. You're a star.
